When you undergo a procedure at RSI, every embryo will be monitored and the couple will receive daily updates on the embryos progress.
As an embryo divides to the 8-cell state, fragments may appear between the cells. Some researchers have suggested that >20% fragmentation may have a detrimental effect on subsequent embryo development. These fragments can be removed from the embryo by a micromanipulation procedure called embryo defragmentation.

While viewing the embryo through the microscope, the embryologist makes a small hole in the shell (zona pellucida), and then inserts a tiny glass pipette through the shell and into the embryo to aspirate the fragments. The physician then transfers the embryo without fragments into the uterus.
